Lot Essay

By 1935 Underwood was looking for ways to incorporate the base of his sculptures into the overall composition. The Chosen, 1968, exemplifies this with the base acting as an extension of the figure itself. The figure is an adaptation of Underwood's earlier wooden sculpture Manitu Bird, 1935.
