Lewis Carroll's novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass have been a rich source of inspiration for artists since their first publication. The fantastical world of Wonderland can be seen as an important precursor to Surrealism; the British Surrealist movement even went so far as to dub themselves 'The Children of Alice', although their visual references are rarely obvious. In the paintings of Agar, Paul Nash, and Roland Penrose however one can discern more direct traces of the novels.
