Lot Essay

Robert Adam's designs for 'Grecian Sphinxes' were employed by leading manufacturers of the late 18th century such as Eleanor Coade and Josiah Wedgewood. A pair of Coade sphinxes of apparently identical design to those here offered were supplied for Gosford House, Scotland circa 1790.
