Earl of Pomfret was a title created in 1721 for Thomas Fermor, 2nd Baron Leominster. The Fermor family descend from Richard Fermor (d. 1552) who acquired great wealth as a merchant. The seat of the Fermor family was Easton Neston in Northamptonshire one of Britain's greatest baroque mansions, which is often linked to two of the most illustrious names in British architecture, Nicholas Hawksmoor and Sir Christopher Wren.
