Lot Essay

The example from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is probably a cast from a French Renaissance original. It displays the letter H and a crescent symbol, this possibly relates to King Henri II of France (1519-1559) and his mistress Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566).
Some of the 'master' frieze panels are believed to have been created as part of the post WWII restoration of bomb damage to the Palace of Westminster, London.

PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS NOT COVERED BY CADOGAN TATE'S STANDARD CHARGES, AS DETAILED ON PAGE 3, AND IS SUBJECT TO AN INDIVIDUAL TRANSFER FEE. PLEASE CONTACT CADOGAN TATE FOR A QUOTE.
