Lot Essay

Domien Ingels (188-1940) is one of Belgium's most acclaimed sculptors. He received his first artistic training from his uncle Domien Van den Bossche before continuing his studies at the Academy of Ghent where he was appointed as a teacher in 1903. At the atelier which he shared with the expressionist painted Constant Permeke, he continued with determination and passion to sculpt figures of animals, above all horses and dogs with greyhounds and borsois amongst his favored subjects, as well as the occasional exotic circus animal. His sculptures are highly expressive, a plausible consequence of the spirit of the times and the fascination with the animal world encouraged by the Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter of which Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc were key and influential members.
