Lot Essay

Inventory records circa 1861 for the château Fontainebleau indicate the delivery of two clocks by the bronzier Denière for Napoleon III, one of which is described as 'a richly ornamented clock with childen and clouds in mat gold and ormolu'. A nearly identical clock, centered with a jasperware plaque, is illustrated in The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Second Empire: Art in France under Napoleon III, 1978, p. 118.

This popular model, has been suitably paired here with figural candelabra by the highly reputable bronzier Henri Picard. For a further note on Henri Picard, please see lot 1.
