Lot Essay

The Caldwell Company design records show an order placed for this elaborate over-mantel mirror by the interior decorator 'Mr. Etesse', whose name appears throughout Caldwell's ledgers during the first decades of the 20th century. Though little is known about his firm, clearly the volume, quality and scale of the works he ordered during this time were supplied to a moneyed set of clientele. In addition to the present mirror, a commission was placed in 1915 for pair of monumental torchères similar to those sold Christie's, New York, 18-19 April 2012, lot 413.
