Louis Marc Solon's Illustrated Journal records this vase as one of a pair completed between the 11th of February and the 11th of March 1885. Midst the handwritten entry for this pair above the design drawing is a parenthetical notation which reads (Mr. C.M.C. Funerals.-), a reference to the passing of Colin Minton Campbell who died at Woodseat, near Uttoxeter, on 8 February 1885. This notation is atypical, as almost all of the references in this journal are works related. It is therefore likely that this piece was made as a Memorial to his colleague and close friend Colin Minton Campbell.
