'I do not seek to impose an idea upon the spectator. People are free to decide what to see in the eyes of my portraits', Souad explains. The viewer does not always know what attracts him to the painting but its there, somewhere holding one spellbound with these outwardly creatures.'
(Souad Mardam Bey, 2012).

Mardam Bey's oversized canvases, adorned with ethereal and ephemera figures through multi-layers of mixed media and aged textures, evoke a world of her own. Her figures are not a mere depiction of everyday life characters but rather a result of the infusion absorbed from her rich varied background of Syrian/German origin and her fascination with Egypt, the Nubians and the cosmopolitan Orient she experienced.

Mardam's technique is magical, both intense and powerful with a focus on the expression of the eyes and the tales that lay behind them, leaving the viewer spellbound with that gaze. She is not trying to impose an idea or to tell a story but merely presents a world full of harmony between technique and subject.

Souad is undeniably a master of colour, texture and costumes. In this painting, her use of bold contrasting strong palette of deep sea blue and white combined with a shy attractive gaze produces a harmony that speaks of the human soul with no reference to gender nor race.
