Despite the fact that over 48 moutardier et plateaux were made for this service, the present example is one of only two known on the market. The mustard pot, cover and stand from the collection de Madame Bernheim sold by Christie's, Paris, 27 May 2004, lot 198, was pre-empted by the Reunion des Musées Nationaux and is now at Versailles.

Specializing in flowers, the unidentified painter that used a number 4 as his signature is recorded at Vincennes from 1753-1754.
