Lot Essay

The first group is modeled after a painting by François Boucher in 1749, Les Mangeurs de Raisins, now in the Wallace Collection. The second is taken from the painting by Boucher, L'Agrable Leçon exhibited at the Salon of 1748, now in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and engraved in 1758 by Ren Gaillard. For the engravings see P. Jean-Richard, L'Oeuvre gravé de François Boucher, dans la Collection Edmond de Rothschild au Musée du Louvre (Paris, 1978), fig. 1029 and S. Ducret, Keramik und Graphik, Braunschweig, 1973, fig. 214.

Les Mangeurs de Raisins first appears for the first time in the sales records on 17 December 1753 and was sold for 144 livres. See T. Préaud and A. d'Albis, La Porcelaine de Vincennes, Paris, 1991, p. 173, no. 177 for the example in the musée national de céramique. An example of the second was sold by Lazare Duvaux for 144 livres to the duchesse de Lauraguais in July 1752. See L. Roth and C. Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, 2000, pp. 340-345, nos. 170 and 171 for glazed examples and a full discussion of the subjects.

Similar examples from the Elizabeth Parke Firestone Collection sold Christie's, New York on 21 March 1991, lots 109 and 110. See also E. Bourgeois, Le Biscuit de Sèvres, pl. 1, nos. 313 and 398.
