The present plate is from a small service given by Louis XV to Queen Maria Carolina Luisa Giuseppa Giovanna Antoina of Naples and the Two Sicilies -- known as Charlotte-Louise in France -- upon the birth of her second daughter. Queen Maria-Carolina was the sister Marie-Antoinette, then the dauphine of France. Louis XV was the newborn princesses' godfather.

Examples from this service can be found in the Louvre, the Museé des Arts décoratifs, Paris and in other prominent collections. See Versailles et les table royales en Europe, exhibition catalogue, Versailles, Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, 1993, p. 338.

Examples have also been sold by Christie's as part of the Pompey Collection, (Christie's, New York, 23 May 2002, lot 48), and the Valentine Collection (Christie's, New York, 21 October 2005, lot 101) when a similar plate realized $26,400.

Jean-Louis Morin is recorded at the factory as a painter of figures, birds, flowers, dock and military scenes from 1754 to 1787.
Jean-Nicolas Le Bel le jeune is recorded as a painter of flowers and patterns at the factory from 1765 to 1793.

Michel-Barnabé Chauvaux père is recorded as a gilder at the factory from 1752 to 1788.
