The decoration on this ecuelle closely relates to that of the Louis XVI service, made in 1783, just a few years prior. Part of one of the scenes on the stand is taken from Venus amène Cupidon au secours de Calypso by Charles Monnet. For an engraving of the subject by C.E. Patas, see G. de Bellaigue, The Louis XVI Service, London, 1986. A compotier coquille from this service, also with this Cupid/Calypso subject is in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Antoine Caton is recorded as a figure painter at the factory from 1749-1797.
