Sculpted in sunken relief, depicting a couple, the woman on a high-backed chair, wearing a heavy wig tied with a headband, her left arm over the left shoulder of her husband, with a perfume cone on his head, holding a mandrake in his left hand, remains of red pigment

Lot Essay

The mandrake, also called 'love apple', is frequently found in banquet scenes dating to the end of Dynasty XVIII. Other examples include a vignette on the gold shrine from the treasure of Tutankhamun and wall paintings from the tomb of Nakht (TT52) in the Theban cemetary.
