Each on hexafoil base with six stylized shells, rising to a trumpet-form baluster also with shells and a spool-form socket, each with removable hexafoil nozzle with shell decoration, the base and nozzle engraved with a crest, marked on bases, sockets, and nozzles

Lot Essay

The crest is that of Hartstonge, co. Limerick.

A similar pair of candlesticks by Fowler sold Sotheby's, London, 27 February 1992, lot 334.

An Irish silver basket by William Townsend and engraved with the Hartstonge coat-of-arms was sold in these Rooms, 21 October 2003, lot 373. Another pair of Irish candlesticks by William Homer, engraved with the Hartstonge crest, sold in these Rooms 26 October, 2007, lot 246.
