A LONGQUAN CELADON AND BISCUIT BUDDHIST GROTTO
MING DYNASTY, 14TH/15TH CENTURY
The shrine is modelled with the figure of Guanyin seated in a meditative pose on a ledge within a grotto, beneath an arch of openwork scrolling clouds and above two attendants in devotion. Her face is finely carved with a serene expression. The reverse has two open circular apertures.

This particular depiction of the deity Guanyin is known as 'The South Sea Guanyin' and is a form of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. The legend explains that a young woman by the name of Miaoshan was martyred and transformed into a manifestation of Avalokitesvara for her piety, and thereafter resided at her South Sea island abode, Potalaka.
