ALKEN, Henry. Characteristic Sketches of Shooting with Caricatures of Cockney Sporting. London: J. Dickinson, January 1826. Oblong 4° (207 x 268mm), 12 hand-coloured etched plates. (Some hairline tears and repairs along inner plate marks, light marginal spotting and staining, 'Woodcock Shooting' with outer margin restored, 'Duck Shooting' with light marginal waterstain.) Full red morocco gilt by Riviere, preserving original title label with gold lettering on a black ground, gilt edges. Provenance: Samuel Murland (small blindstamp at upper margin of several plates).
The first six plates show the proper way to shoot, while the bungling efforts of 'Middlesex' sportsmen misfiring their guns provide a comic equivalent for the other six. The title label gives the original publication price of twelve shillings for the twelve plates. RARELY FOUND AS A SEPARATE SET. Mellon/Snelgrove 50; not in Schwerdt, Siltzer or Tooley.
