FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Apperley's hero, Frank Raby, has been described as 'an idealised portrait of himself as he would have been if provided with the income proper to a natural-born Meltonian' (Aubrey Noakes, The World of Henry Alken, 1952, p. 61).
