AN ENGRAVED GLASS NAMED AND DATED ALE JUG

Of baluster form with a flared 'Lynn' ribbed neck, the lower part with pinched ribbed ornament, supported by a conical foot, named for IOSEPH HOLLY above a pendant hop husk and crossed ears of barley and the date 1768, applied with a strap handle with scroll lower terminal

Lot Essay

The ornament to the lower part of this ale jug is remeniscent of the 'nip't diamond waies' decoration described by Ravenscroft in 1677 and seen on Dutch and English glass of the 17th century, see lots 186 and 187 in this sale.
