The rectangular divided bevelled plates within a gadrooned frame surmounted by a ho-ho bird and confronted C-scrolls, the sides with squirrels, birds and dogs perched on scrolling branches and acanthus, with a foliate C-scroll apron

Lot Essay

The carved and painted mirror is inspired by designs for pier glasses published by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779) in the Director (1754, 56 and 62). It relates to a pair of giltwood pier glasses that also feature squirrels possibly commissioned either for Newby Park or Studley Royal, Yorkshire and sold in these rooms, 'Mount Congreve: The London Sale', 23 May 2012, lot 104, £133,250 including premium.
