Lot Essay

This fine giltwood mirror in the 'chinese taste' popularised by designs for 'Chinese Case' furniture in Thomas Chippendale's (d.1779) Director (published 1754, 1756 and 1762) relates to a pier glass illustrated in G. Wills, English Looking-glasses, 1965, p.91, fig.72. Other examples include a very similar mirror at Capard House, Co. Lasis, Ireland, and another in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture from Gothic to Sheraton, 1937, p.203. The present example was exhibited in 1960 from the stand of J. de Haan & Son Ltd. at The Antique Dealers' Fair, London (The Antique Dealers' Fair, 1960, p. 32).
