Painter, sculptor and printmaker, Frank Stella is one of the foremost visual artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Committed to abstraction, Stella’s career as a printmaker has progressed side-by-side with that as a painter, moving from the ordered geometric shapes of the Star of Persia and Black Series in the mid to late 60s to the barely controlled chaos of the Imaginary Places and Near East series over thirty years later. The present work is typical of his later style, and is the result of complex technical experimentation and effort at the workshops of his long-term master-printer and collaborator, Ken Tyler.
