The high-quality illusionistic marquetry, carefully shaded by hot sand, is almost certainly the work of Chippendale's great rivals Mayhew and Ince (fl.1759-1804) whose other well-documented characteristics include burr yew panels and strings of 'pearl' inlay. An almost identical Pembroke table sold Sothebys, New York, 15 April 2010, lot 110.
