Lot Essay

The picturesque sight of itinerant Italian street vendors, holding aloft a tray of plaster figures, was captured by several artists including John William Smith who immortalized the subject in his 'Cries of London'. William Muller painted several street vendors including An Italian Boy with a Hurdy-Gurdy (Cheltenham Art Gallery).
