Lot Essay

Born into a family of pottery masters dating back to the late Edo period, Kato Takuo studied ceramic art under his father Kobe Kato and in 1965 travelled to Finland to continue his studies. His works were accepted for the Nitten (Imperial Art Exhibition) for seven successive years from 1956, finally becoming a Ningen Kokuho [Living National Treasure].
