The blade is by one of the great number of smiths of the Sue-Bizen (late Bizen) school at Osafune who signed Sukesada in the late 15th and 16th centuries. Many such swords were so-called 'kazu-uchi mono' hurriedly made during the turmoils of the 'Age of Warring Provinces', but among which were a number of better-quality pieces. The hamon of this sword is made in nie, typical of Sue-Bizen work, and the quality is higher than most kazu-uchi mono.
