Lot Essay

This handsome commode bears the sumptuous and highly original ormolu angle mounts after the models designed by Alexandre-Jean Oppenordt. Oppenordt (1639-1715) obtained workshops at the Manufacture Royal des Gobelins and in 1684 moved his atelier to the Galerie du Louvre when he became ébéniste ordinaire du roi. A commode with identical mounts, along with marquetry designed by Jean Bérain, was sold Christie's, London, 5 July 2012, lot 9.
