Lot Essay

This elegant table with its restrained lines and use of architectural ornament reflects the understated neo-classicism of the 1760s and 1770s that became known as the Goût Grec. Though the maker of this table is unknown, the distinctive ormolu Vitruvian scroll mounts to the frieze are often featured in the work of Jacques van Oosterink, called Dautriche. A pair of commodes with this frieze were sold anonymously at Christie's, London, 13 June 2002, lot 170.
