Lot Essay

A number of bureaux of similar form by Jacques Dubois are recorded, often employing sumptuous panels of Japanese lacquer as on this example, notably one from the château de Breteuil, sold Sotheby's, Monaco, 14 June 1982, lot 480; one stamped with the crowned 'C', illustrated in A. Pradère, les Ebénistes Français de Louis XIV à la Révolution, Paris, 1989, p. 170; and one formerly in the collection of Djahanguir Riahi, sold Christie's, New York, 2 November 2000, lot 51 ($210,000 exc. premium).

Sidney and Jenny Brown-Sulzer assembled one of the most important collection of French Impressionists before the First World War, to which they added a fine collection of French furniture and Chinese porcelain in the 1920's. The inscription 'Weiller' to the underside of this bureau probably refers to René Weiller, the celebrated Parisian dealer.
