The yew cylinder bureau can be attributed to Gillows based on a virtually identical example from the collection of the Earls of Derby at Knowlsey Hall, Lancaster, with fretwork swan's neck cornice and mounted with the firm's signature oval pulls (see M. Jourdain and F. Rose, English Furniture: The Georgian Period (1750-1830), London, 1952, pl. 92). A Gillows drawing dated 1798 is inscribed for the Countess of Derby at Knowsley confirming the family's patronage of the firm (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Herefordshire, 1995, fig. 155, p. 171).
