CASE: Rising hood with gilt finials, trunk door with molded frame and lenticle, bird and floral marquetry, conforming marquetry to the plinth DIAL: 11¾ in. square brass dial signed 'Claudius Du Chesne Londini', with cherub-and-crown spandrels, fleur-de-lys half-hour markers, gilt matte center with subsidiary seconds ring and date aperture, pierced blued steel hands MOVEMENT: with five ring-turned pillars, anchor escapement and outside countwheel strike to bell, bearing a paper label inscribed 1989.14.1
95½ in. (243 cm.) high, 16½ in. (42 cm.) wide, 9½ in. (24 cm.) deep

Claude Du Chesne or Duchesne, a Huguenot who fled Paris, is recorded working in London on Dean Street - St. Ann Soho from circa 1690. He was Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1693 and died circa 1730. For a related longcase clock with movement by Du Chesne, see Christie's, Amsterdam 24-25 June, 2008, lot 83 (46,600 EUR).
