Agra, one of the capitals of Mughal India, has had a long and illustrious history of carpet weaving dating back to the 16th century. The designs of these imperial carpets were most often imported from Persia, although several distinctively Indian types were also developed. The present example, woven during the 19th century commercial revival of carpet production, demonstrates exceptional quality in both wool and technique. The gorgeously vivid palate and elegant diamond lattice design make it an exemplar of 19th century carpets arts.
