Lot Essay

This tazza is signed by the celebrated Roman marble mason and bronze-founder Benedetto Boschetti (d. 1870), who fed the growing demand for high quality works of art with an antique theme created by an influx of grand tourists. He worked out of workshops in the center of Rome, where he produced a large number of classically inspired objects ranging from bronzes to tabletops and mosaics. A related rosso antico tazza was sold in these rooms in Steinitz: New York, 21 Jun 2012, lot 533 ($52,500).
