Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1994
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Offered in an original wooden case
Tasting Note: Finding myself with some odd bottles in my country house cellar, I put four '94s together, two of Kendall-Jackson's Cabernets (from California), one rather unfairly, of Chateau La Tour-de-By, and the Mouton which I am happy to say had a deep, rich, velvety robe ; crisp, intense, spicy Cabernet Sauvignon aroma ; 'great length', very tannic. This was in March 1998. A few days later I tasted it against the '95 bottles sent to me by Phillipine de Rothschild to provide notes for the Mouton labels book. It didn't stand the comparison : lean, whereas the '9( was rich. It showed much better a dew months later at the MW tasting, mainly because so many of the other '94s were mediocre. Another old botttle consumed at home : very fragrant in my big Riedel glasses, good fruit, dry finish (February 2000) and, lost recently, tasted blind, with the other first growth '94s. My score was on par with Chateau Lafite, finding it leathery and lacking Mouton's flair. March 2001. *** M.B.
