Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1953
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Bin-soiled labels, one stained, one very stained. Levels: one mid/upper and three low-shoulder
Tasting note: Tasted in cask on my first visit to Bordeaux in 1955. Violet, searingly, mouth-puckeringly tannic. Hard to envisage a mature charmer though developed well from the mid-1960s through the 1980s. Superb bottles in 1996 and 2000. Very distinctive character: hot, earthy, delicious. Most recently: rich, autumnal colour; scent of old stables, iron, earthy, which just sat in the glass. Rich, characterful, but a touch of decay on the finish. Last noted Dec 2002. At best ***** M.B.
