Château Mouton-Rothschild--Vintage 1953
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Slightly bin-soiled label. Level low-shoulder
Tasting Note: First tasted in its tenth year and from then on a most lovely wine. I have nearly 20 notes, not one of them less than sensationally good - I see that in 1972 I went over the top and awarded it 6 stars for sheer perfection, and I described its appearance as 'deep and crisp and even', but this was being playful as it was never more than fairly deep. But, as always with Mouton, it is its glittering, dazzling bouquet and flavour, its spiciness, its zest which attracts. Never a dull moment - just like Baron Philippe himself and, nowadays, epitomised by his daughter Philippine. The most recent notes include a perfect though by now more restrained bottle, but lovely, at de Cock's Diner du samedi in Paris, and a glorious bottle, displaying Mouton's inimitable blackcurrant aroma, and fragrant, many-layered flavours. Fascinating, great length. November 2000. ***** M.B.
