Lot Essay

Warhol's celebrity rose quickly following his first exhibition at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and grew to include many patrons in the Los Angeles area including Frederick Weisman, a successful businessman and famed collector of contemporary art. His son, Richard Weisman, was also a close friend of Warhol, even commissioning the Athlete Series of portraits in 1977.
