Lot Essay

In 1975, the sitter was tentatively identified as the Amsterdam lawyer and merchant Hermanus Amya (1657-1700), whom Nicolaes Maes portrayed with his wife. This and its pendant of Catherina de Volgelaer are now in the Louvre (inv. nos. 2858/9).
