Lot Essay

This is a studio version of Hanneman's prototype in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (inv.no. 1280). According to a note, once attached to the back of the painting (see: Nationaal Archief, The Hague, Lotsy Family inv.no. 57), it was a gift by Johan de Witt to his sister Maria and is in family possession ever since.
