4° (220 x 135mm). Contemporary polished tree calf, flat spine gilt in compartments with a green morocco label and numbered '138' in gilt at spine head, the sides with gilt border and centred with the Russian Imperial eagle in gilt, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (corners rubbed, short split at spine foot, some gilt lost). Provenance: Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich (1827-1892; bookplate).

GRAND DUKE KONSTANTIN NIKOLAEVICH'S COPY, from his library at the Marble Palace. Konstantin was a vital ally to his brother, Alexander II, in achieving emancipation for the serfs. Ambrose's treatise underlines man's duty to strive for what is good for all rather than what is good for the individual -- an idea in keeping with the spirit of Alexander and Konstantin's reforms. Ivask, vol. 1, dr. 11.
