FILIMONOV, Georgii Dmitrievich (1818-1898). Sbornik na 1873 god, izdannyi obshchestvom drevne-russkago iskusstva pri Moskovskom Publichnom Muzee. [A Gathering for the year 1873, published by the Society of Ancient Russian Art at the Moscow Public Museum.] Moscow: University Press, 1873.
4° (337 x 252mm). 8 plates, of which four are folding and one is a lithograph printed in ochre. (Some light mostly marginal soiling, folding plates with a few short tears.) Contemporary diced russia, upper side titled in gilt, white moiré-style endpapers, edges gilt (rebacked, corners rubbed). Provenance: Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Veste Coburg bookplate with manuscript shelf mark '14/3.2').
THE SAXE-COBURG GOTHA COPY. The book almost certainly came to Veste Coburg around 1874 with Grand Duchess Mariia Aleksandrovna, eldest daughter of Tsar Alexander II, when she married Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, later Third Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The publication includes Filimonov's essay on Simon Ushakov, 'Simon Ushakov i sovremennaia emu epokha Russkoi Ikonopisi' -- a major contribution to the understanding of 17th-century Russian Art and the importance of Ushakov's work. Also includes contributions from Vinogradsky, and Razumovsky. RARE: WorldCat records just two copies: at the British Library and at the University of Toronto.
