MICHAUD, Joseph (1767-1839). Histoire des progrès et de la chûte de l'Empire de Mysore. Paris: Giguet and Co., 1801-1809.
2 volumes, 8° (200 x 125mm). Half titles. Engraved portrait frontispiece, two folding maps, one of these hand-coloured in outline, two plans and one folding aquatint. (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary marbled calf, flat spines gilt in compartments with calf labels, edges yellow (light wear). Provenance: Tsarskoe Selo (stamps; pencilled shelf mark '39/7') -- Plaza Book Auction, New York (sold, 21-24 November 1933, lot 741; label and description tipped-in) -- Calvin Bullock (bookplate) -- Christie's (sold, 15 October 1997, part lot 294).
FIRST EDITION. THE TSARSKOE SELO COPY. Michaud's account of Tipu Sultan's wars against British and allied forces entered the Tsarskoe Selo library shortly before the Russo-Persian Treaty of 1813 -- an event marking the beginning of the so-called Great Game. Russia's increasing influence in Central Asia was seen by some in Westminster as a direct threat to British India. (2)
