FIRST EDITION. NICHOLAS II'S COPY FROM HIS LIBRARY AT THE WINTER PALACE. This volume compiles reports and documents relating to the sea battles of July and August 1904. Russia's significant losses in this war contributed to the popular discontent that fuelled the 1905 Revolution, and Nicholas's eventual ousting in 1917. As well as its Pacific Fleet, Russia lost much of its international prestige in this conflict; this report was intended to draw lessons from the rout, and allowed the implementations of military reforms which put Russia on a stronger footing, particularly on the German front. Published in an unspecified but small number for official use only, with circulation explicitly forbidden for a period of 10 years after publication.
