Contemporary green morocco, sides with scrolling border in gilt, upper side centred with the double-headed eagle of the Russian Empire, edges gilt, textured endpapers (lightly rubbed, endpapers somewhat discoloured). Provenance: Elagin Palace (binding) -- unidentified blind-stamp with the motto 'Je Maintiendrai' -- A. Herenroth.
THE ELAGIN PALACE COPY. Alexander I bought Elagin from Count Orlov for his mother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, and retained Rossi for the reconstruction. This Rossi masterpiece was later used by the Tsar's family as a summer residence.
