2° (545 x 355mm). 9 lithographed plates on china, chromolithographed title and preliminaries. (Mounts browned but not affecting the images, some light soiling, dampstain in the bottom margin.) Contemporary green half leather, flat spine tooled and lettered in gilt (corners and spine ends repaired). Provenance: Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich (1831-1891; bookplate, inventory label on the spine numbered '1731').

FIRST EDITION. GRAND DUKE NIKOLAI NIKOLAEVICH'S COPY. In 1836 Montferrand moved the Tsar-kolokol, the world's largest bell, from the pit on Ivanov Square where it had languished for nearly a century following an accident, to a granite pedestal. Grand Duke Nikolai, son of Tsar Nicholas I, was later appointed Inspector General of Engineers.
