FIRST EDITION. ALEXANDER II'S COPY, with his bookplate in each volume. This popular social satire builds on the huge success of Jérome Paturot à la recherche d'une position sociale; both works were widely reprinted and translated. Alexander's reign is characterised by social reform, particularly the 1861 emancipation of the serfs. (4)
