2° (397 x 270mm). Text printed within engraved borders. Engraved portrait frontispiece by Antipev after Argunov. (Spotting throughout.) Contemporary mottled calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, morocco label, edges red (spine ends and corners neatly repaired). Provenance: 'Pridvornoi Biblioteki' (blind-stamp on upper side) -- Russian booksellers (small stamps).

FIRST EDITION. FROM THE COURT LIBRARY OF CATHERINE II. 'A GREAT RARITY' (Bitovt). Catherine decreed in 1768 that a court library should be built to gather the finest examples of printing from throughout Russia; by the end of her reign the library comprised 4360 volumes. Pisma collects more than 230 letters from Peter I to Sheremetev covering the period from 5 December 1700 to 9 October 1718. With a long introduction by Gerard Fridrikh Miller.
