With single-panel top set within the rectangular frame above plain aprons, the whole raised on short legs of square section terminating in hoof feet

Foot rests have been used in association with a wide array of furniture, including chairs, couches, painting tables, beds and thrones. See Robert H. Ellsworth, Chinese Furniture: One Hundred Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection, New York, 1996, pp. 58-9, no. 9, for a pair of similar 17th century foot rests used in conjunction with a 'four-corner's exposed' offical's hat armchair.
