The vessel is decorated with an exterior landscape of clouds, rocks and trees depicting a scene from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in which warriors on foot and on horse battle with long staffs, all between bands of incised waves and foliate scrolls, the shoulder is painted with a bird, butterflies and winged insects amongst foliage, two incised lines encircle the rim.

Lot Essay

The scene is from the 14th century historical novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and depicts one of Liu Bei's generals rescuing Liu Bei's son from capture by rival general Cao Cao.
